Hi!!kao_sparkles.png I play the flute, and I was looking for people to share their instruments and their favourite song to play at the moment! My favourite is Carol of the bells!!kao_yoroshiku.png

Piano and guitar (acoustic). Haven't played in quite some time though. It's hard to pick favourite songs... maybe Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton (guitar) and River Flows in You by Yiruma (piano). Both are quite fun to play. Mad World by Gary Jules (piano) is another one I like. Last song I learned (not fully) was Fly Me to the Moon (piano).

Edit: Played a bit after I posted this :)

Aw, such a nice topic! Can't wait to hear what everyone has to say.

Irregular piano player here. Went to music school as a kid, so for many years I only knew or had classical sheet music. My oldschool upright stayed at my parents', but some years ago I got an old electronic piano and started to get into music that was written less than three centuries ago. :)) It was... not as straightforward as you'd think. It's like I'm hardwired for classical. And then the piano died on me, so until I get a new one everything is on hold. I miss playing, though.

As for favourites... (I guess I'll skip the classics) Billie Holiday's I'll Be Seeing You is nice to play. Scott Joplin's The Entertainer is a challenge for my sense of rhythm. Michael Nyman's The Piano is deceptively easy, but actually a challenge. The only Japanese sheet music I have is , from... ALWAYS, I think.

I actually play a Kalimba, a mouth organ and piano =)
I love to play sad songs in kalimba and joyful songs on a mouth organ. Quiet weird ik =(
@ギョルギ : That song (Mad World by Gary Jules ) is in my playlist. 😉
My favorite songs on kalimba are Despair - Yasuharu Takanashi; Haggstrom (C418). As for a piano my favorite (recently) is "Thomas x thick of it XD"

I used to play a little piano (well, keyboard to be exact), and now I'm learning guitar! I can't really say I ever knew how to properly play the piano because I never learned how to read sheet music, but I picked up a couple songs simply by ear. As for guitar, the first thing I learned to play was the classic riff from Nirvana's Come As You Are kao_ball.png The first full song I learned was blue by yung kai kao_drink.png

Inkheart, are you learning guitar by ear as well? Learning to read music is like learning to read text: it gets harder as you get older.

Nightlite, I had no idea you were a marimba player! Have you seen my posts about Marimba-san (Fumito Nunoya)?

Right now I'm using guitar tabs to learn kao_drink.png I tried using lyrics with chords over them for a while, but it's impossible to learn the nuances of a song that way, so I switched to tabs.

I haven't! Who are they? kao_think.png Also I play more than just marimba; I play vibraphone, gong, bass drum, timpani, sleigh bells, triangle...

One of these days I need to figure out how guitar tabs work. Right now, they’re about as incomprehensible as Korean writing to me. (Nothing against Korean, I just can’t read it.)

The marimba thread is here: /forums/topics/11928/marimba

@ポールおじちゃん Guitar tabs are actually way easier to read than sheet music. I bet you could learn how to read them in a day.

Each line corresponds to one of the strings (in order, but upside down), it's read left to right, each number is a position on the fretboard (0 being open, ascending going up the neck), notation isn't too difficult either.

I think that’s my problem. I have no clue how guitar strings are organized or what hand positions are used.

I completely understand, tabs seemed like a foreign language to me as well when I first discovered them kao_lazy.png They're very specific (giving you exact finger and fret placement), which makes them great for a beginner who hasn't yet learned all the chords they need to know. The only downside is they don't give you any concept of the flow of the song, so you either have to know the song you're playing very well or listen to it frequently to stay on the beat.

It's so cool to read about all the different instrumets you play! And while I won't reply to everything in one comment, I might be giving some comments in these longer posts

kao_sparkle.png

@Inkheart, guitar is a nice instrument, and guitar tabs are pretty easy to read, but my fingers never move that fast on guitar...kao_shocking.png

@セージ͎.𝓡_8̯̭͓̓̇͂̽, I've never even heard of the kalimba and the mouth organ! I'd be interested to hear more about them if you will!!kao_sparkles.png
