I usually listen to English-dubbed anime because I can't exactly process Japanese audio and English subtitles at the same time, but I may rewatch the early seasons of One Piece with the Japanese dub since I already know what's going on. Do you have any good recommendations for animes that you reference during your studies?
Anime that I'm interested in motivates me the most! That is to say, I recommend people watch the anime that they want to watch. some people make themselves watch Peppa Pig in Japanese when they start and have a bad time... but with that said, there's anime at a lot of different levels to watch. I had a lot of fun doing a "sampler" of sorts by spending an afternoon at some anime screenings. They had everything from Ouran High School Host Club to Vampire Knight. so I got to get a feel of the kinds of anime I'd want to spend the most time with while learning.
Personal favorites at this time, in no particular order or difficulty: One-Punch Man, Evangelion, Lucky Star, Cardcaptor Sakura, Shirokuma Cafe, and Berserk
I was actually going to do the same thing with One Piece! I recently started the show, and pausing during that part where they show the title and reading those parts has been really fun! As for recommendations, One Punch is a really fun anime if you haven't already watched it! Erased is also a really cool anime!
saiki k is one of my faves for listening practice ^ - ^
it really all depends. my favorite animes in general are bungou stray dogs, sk8, ohshc, and saiki k, but they're a challenge. i've found that spy x family is good if you want to get a feel for how kids talk, but still hard. watching kids shows / familiar shows has been good for me too, but i just watch what i want to and enjoy, generally.
For listening practice pretty much any anime in sub helps me, some of my favorites are Fullmetal Alchemist and Hunter x Hunter. I'd suggest trying out Japanese music too though. I can't tell you how many times I've learned a word through a song! It also gives you a real sense of satisfaction when you can pick out phrases 😊 good artists for that are Burnout Syndromes or Official Hige Dandism or if you're looking for something with more English lyrics mixed in ONE OK ROCK is really good too 😊 hope this helped
EDIT: Thinking on it a bit more I remembered Haikyu!! which has a lot of English volleyball terms is also really easy to understand. I've been learning Japanese for three years on different platforms though so it might just be experience helping me but I was rewatching it and it was really easy to understand.
If I really like an anime, I'll just enjoy it (mostly via Crunchyroll) with Japanese audio and the English sub. Right now the amazing Kusuriya no HItorigoto is my favourite watch. But if I'm using anime specifically to to improve my Japanese level (and I try and do a little bit every day), I watch using either Animelon or LanguageReactor-plus-Netflix, and then I watch anime with Japanese (kanji) subs only displayed (but I can still hover the mouse over the Japanese transcript to get an English translation if necessary.) Also with Animelon or LanguageReactor-plus-Netflix, I tend to go for simpler material. Eg at the moment I'm watching Shirokuma Cafe on Animelon and Kimi ni Todoke on Netflix. It can be a bit slow, but I feel like it really improves my vocabulary plus my listening and reading abilities.
