さ vs み

さ is more objective and general, while み is more subjective and emotional and used in recent times by young people increasingly on social media.

「~み」と「~さ」はどちらも形容詞を名詞化する接尾辞ですが、「~さ」は客観的・一般的・程度を表し、「~み」は主観的・感覚的・実感を伴う概念を表す傾向があります。近年、若者言葉で「やばみ」「うれしみ」のように「~み」が多用されるようになり、より感情を込めた表現として広まりました。

「~さ」の特徴
客観的・一般的: 誰にとっても同じように評価できる性質。
程度・レベル: 数値化できるような度合い。
例: 「悲しさ」(悲しいという度合い)、「深さ」(物理的な深さ)、「面白さ」(客観的な面白さ)。

「~み」の特徴
主観的・感覚的: 個人の経験や感覚に基づく感情や性質。
実感を伴う: 心や体が感じるような感覚(うまみ、痛み、重みなど)。
例: 「悲しみ」(悲しいという感情そのもの)、「深み」(趣や味わい)、「面白み」(魅力や趣)。

深さ vs. 深み:
「この穴の深さは3メートルだ。」(客観的な程度)
「この話には深みがある。」(内容の趣、味わい)

面白さ vs. 面白み:
「この映画は面白さに欠ける。」(客観的な面白さの度合い)
「この映画は面白みがあるね。」(魅力、味わい)

「~み」の広がり
SNSを中心に「やばみ」「分かりみ」のように、形容詞に「~み」をつけることで、より感情を込めて共感や状態を表す用法が拡大しています。

What is the difference between this み ending and the さ ending in like 強さor 寒さ?

The さ is used to describe a degree or amount - think of it more as a measurement.
