Grammar usage notes

In speech, というわけ often gets shortened to ってわけ, and it’s used when explaining, concluding, or realizing something based on what’s been said. For example:

(He caught a cold? So that means he’s taking the day off.)

(That’s why I can’t go. I’m busy.)

really nitpicky, but in the definition, there's one bracket on the side of the last A... ^.^;;

Hi,

I read some sentences where "というわけだ" seams not to be used as a reason/explanation, but more in a conclusive/result/how it works way :

今、仕事を片付けてしまえば、明日は楽ができるという訳です。If I finish all the work now, I can have an easy day tomorrow.

I see. So it turns out nobody comes.

I'm married so I can't date you.

Do I misunderstand something ?

I'd consider というわけだ and わけだ to be separate expressions because they do mean two different things, as you noted.

They are kind of related, if you think of わけ as "circumstance, situation" and という as "such a":

わけだ -"situation exists..." to provide a logical reason for, or to produce the expected result.

というわけだ -"such a situation exists..." that something did or didn't, can or can't happen.

Thank you for your answers, however I am still puzzled about how to use

From what you said, its traduction depends on sentence's context, and so we can have :

1) [sentence + という] + わけだ (your part 1) => to provide logical / obvious / expected : reason / situation / result

If I finish all the work now, I can have an easy day tomorrow.

I see. So it turns out nobody comes.

I'm married so I can't date you.

=> supposing here that という is used only to emphasize the reason / situation / result ?

2) [sentence] + というわけだ (your part 2) => to state a possible reason / explanation

The reason I can speak Japanese is because I studied it for seven years in America, and have been living in Japan for four.

The reason that I can graduate is that I study hard.

The reason I'm here is to teach children english.
