Aに沿って: in accordance with A; in line with A; along with A

Meaning/Function
Expresses that something is going 'along with (A)', 'in accordance with (A)', or 'in line with (A)'.

Ex. のルールに沿って、をするずタイムカードをしてからにしてください。
(In accordance with company rules, please make sure to clock-in before you begin overtime.)

Notes
As the base meaning of 沿う is 'to follow along', it will also regularly be seen in relation to going along some specific path or street.

Ex. この沿ってってください。

I might be mistaken, but I don’t think “Along with” should be included in the meaning. From what I understand it would work better as “according to~” or “follows~.”


For example, from Shinkanzen:

沿ってっている。

My translation for this is:

They are making the proposal for this year in accordance with (according to) the government’s basic principles now


This might be wrong, but I feel it’s closer in meaning to “along with the basic principles they are making a proposal for this year.”


Again I could be wrong, and if I am please let me know since I’m studying this grammar point now

I would think of it more like "along with" like..."along with his wishes" 沿って (which could also be said as in "in accordance with his wishes".
