Grammar usage notes

"次第" (しだい) has two primary uses, both related to how an outcome is determined by a condition or reason:

1. Reason/Explanation (Formal Usage at Sentence End):

Used to politely explain why something was done or to justify an action.

Example: 心配でお伺いした次第です。 ("I came to inquire because I was worried.")

Think of it as "That's the reason why..." or "That's how it came about."

2. Dependence/Contingency (Mid-Sentence Usage):

Indicates that the outcome is contingent on a factor or condition.

Example: 天気次第で決めます。 ("I'll decide depending on the weather.")

Think of it as "depending on" or "based on."

Connection Between the Two:

Both usages share the concept of "an outcome being determined by a preceding condition or reason." The difference lies in whether the result has already occurred (formal explanation) or is yet to happen (contingency).

In the third example sentence, should it really be 僕? In most cases it would be a female whose name changes after marriage. Just thought it was a bit strange

僕 can also be used by women/girls - especially recently, it seems to be used most often by either girls (maybe slightly more on the tomboy side of the scale) and なんとなく effeminite guys (or children of both genders)

As a young girl (anything under University age) I would agree, though I rarely hear any of my female students refer to themselves as 僕 (I've heard it from one, but she's quite tomboy-ish). As a female at marrying age, I figure they would have grown out of it

well considering I have many elementary school students whose parents are in their 20s, I'd say "marrying age" and "under University age" aren't exactly mutually exclusive, depending on where you are!
