I have really enjoyed reading everyone's answers to this post!
It really is very satisfying to find oneself able to read and understand things that used to look utterly incomprehensible.
As a language teacher, learning Japanese has also made me much more empathetic with my own students. I now understand how easy it can be to always mix up the same two words or make the same mistake over and over again.
I'm also very glad to have discovered so many amazing communities and resources (like renshuu, which is truly the best thing since sliced bread) and to have met so many amazing and fascinating people, like teachers and other students.
I am on my second trip to Japan now. During the first one I knew like three words and it was fine for touristy places, but it’s so rewarding to interact in Japanese and I get endless entertainment from trying to read ads in subway haha

I completely get it. Even with bare minimum knowledge, Japanese ads are more fun and cute. The best part, I can't even be persuaded because I have no idea what they are saying or think it is a minute short like chiikawa before realising it is an ad . I could be watching a dance thinking is it a new music video before realising; yup, I fell for an ad and could had used that tume to pour myself some water instead of sitting on the hotel bed watching that. And if it is a poster ad, my brain always thinks anime before commercial advertisements in Japan.
