I am just getting back to studying after taking around 2 years off, and easing my way back in to my backlog of reviews, starting with Japanese basics.
It's only been a couple days now, so still trying to relearn how everything works on renshuu. One issue I've come across today was that I was missing grammar (conjugation) questions because I'm rusty on vocabulary.
For instance, when a sentence wants me to conjugate "to swim", but I don't remember the ending for およぐ... if I think maybe it's およむ (I can't remember the actual answer choices, this is just for illustration), I know the MEANING I'm going for, and the conjugation for it, but I can't remember if it's ぐ or む (which is a vocabulary issue), and I get the answer wrong because I incorrectly choose およみました instead of およぎました...
Again, vocabulary issue, not grammar. My question is, is there a way to choose settings so that the pool of answers focus on knowledge of grammar instead of vocabulary (when doing grammar reviews)? I may have known this years ago, but I'm not finding it now. Not sure where to look. I just don't want to lose mastery/increase review frequency on grammar points that I get wrong because of a lack of vocabulary recall. If that makes sense.
Welcome back. I don’t think there are settings in the quizzes that do that. You could mark verbs that you’ve forgotten as unknowns to prevent them from coming up in quizzes, but that seems like it would cause more problems down the road.
If I was you, I would just focus on the vocabulary for now, but that may be my bias showing.
Not sure how many vocabulary terms of nearly 2,000 I have studied so far are verbs, but probably unrealistic to mark them all as unknowns. I did consider just "deleting" all my previous progress and start again from nothing, but thought that was too extreme and might be more frustrating than helpful. My quizzes so far have mostly come in at 95-100% with 20 terms per quiz (I'm starting back in VERY gradually), so I haven't forgotten a ton... mostly just rusty.
I was just hoping that, as far as grammar goes, it could test (with conjugation) polite past vs non-past, or casual (both tenses), te-form, etc. rather than a more vocabulary based む vs る vs す, etc. (just seemed more of a vocabulary question than grammar). But I understand there are limitations to the program.
I know you can set quizzes to avoid having answers with spelling errors, for instance, or ゆ vs ゅ (I can't remember the term for the smaller characters for like みゅ、みゃ、みょ), so hoped there might be something for this.
Thank you for the insight. I may just look up the dictionary forms of verbs (in those cases) to get the correct ending so I can focus on the actual conjugation. Until I'm back in the swing of things, at least. 😁

I'm not sure how else to "pause to review". What I'm doing is going back to "Japanese Basics" lesson reviews (I left off at "Pre-Intermediate N4" before my extended break). That's basically my review... hiragana, katakana, and pre-N5 vocabulary and grammar. I was just hoping there was a way to set grammar (the problem I'm having with conjugation, anyway) to test forms rather than what feels more like vocabulary problems. Similar to how quizzes can be set to avoid misspellings and ambiguous characters.
I'm sure I'll work something out, since it seems there's no setting for that, though.
You could use the "dropping mastery to 0" setting.
I use it to separate the words that I really need to study again from those I don't really need to study. If I make a mistake for example, I don't do anything but if I still remember the word, I remove them from the schedule (either manually or through the advanced tools by selecting all the words beyond a certain level). It was pretty useful to "clean" my schedules in the past after a burn out for example or a deliberate break (I did not study some schedules for months on purpose and I tested myself after to save some time and efforts).
Like, if you do some focus review and if you still remember some words after 2 years, just remove them or block them. Those levels are not accurate anymore anyway. Could set a daily limit for the review too.

That makes sense. I definitely don't want to relearn everything, which is why I was nervous with the idea of resetting everything. I mostly need to brush up, just a refresher so things come back to me. I've been pretty surprised how well I've been doing so far, especially since I have it set to enter the answers myself rather than multiple choice (so I'm not just passively picking the familiar answers without actually coming up with them on my own). Anyway, seems I haven't forgotten as much as I was afraid I had. And thanks for the suggestions!
