I came across this sentence, and I'm a little confused about the particles, specifically the の.

はへやそうじをしました。

Could someone please explain why の is used where it is here? I guess it shows that the room is the brother's, but I'm not really sure how that works - I thought that を would've been used since the room is being acted on. Any explanation would be appreciated, thank you! :)

is also a noun (cleaning, lets say), that can become a suru verb (literally it could mean something like “to do the cleaning”, so, to clean). の connects two nouns. would be “the cleaning of a/the room”. は marks, in this case, who does the action: that is , the younger brother. Together it would mean “my younger brother did the cleaning of the room/ aka my younger brother cleaned the room”

Also, if you ever have any questions on grammar or words of a sentence inside renshuu (whether in grammar list practice or on example sentences for words) you can click the yellow bubble icon and ask a question on the sentence directly! Hope this helped and gl kao_guts.png

On a side note, the sentence could also be written as はへやをそうじしました。

Since を marks the direct object of the verb, there's always only one を in a verb phrase. That's why, when を replaced the の, そうじをする became そうじする.

Oh I was wondering about that, thank you! That makes sense :)
