I find it hard to find good references for everyday handwriting in japanese..

I know people will write sloppily to the point of mystery in just about every language, and i think 'correct letter writing' holds little value because every hand writes different. So bad handwriting doesnt really bother me.

But i cant really tell if this would pass as bad handwriting, or if it looks more like a toddler just tried to copy text by vibes alone...

Especially in terms of kanji (and me not remembering 1in5)

This looks fine. Mine's worse kao_dejected.png

The only point you could make is that it looks like computer fonts, but that's not really a bad thing, is it? I've seen far worse *Japanese* handwritings, so you're good!

Pretty good. Better than average japanese handwritting. I struggle more with natives. Well to be exact, I didn't even struggle with yours, so...

The writing is 110% readable and I would add awesome and neater than mine or any other friends I have that study Japanese.

I've read (or at least tried to read) handwriting in Japan that I can't make out due to messiness if it is ソ or ン, or a really messy し and more horrible scenarios I would rather not say.

It hadn't occurred to me to think of that (mostly, I'm just happy when I can remember how to write the kanji!), but now suddenly I'm worrying my own handwriting looks bad. kao_worry.png It's a funny thought, with Latin letters we all have a feel for what qualifies as neat handwriting, weird handwriting, primary-schooler handwriting, fancy handwriting, so many nuances. @mikaelster , you've opened a really interesting subject! Congrats on your writing and your Japanese journey.

it's perfectly legible and i don't think you have much of anything to worry about like others have said.

i'm mostly making this comment to offer advice for a potential avenue of improvement--if you want to work on it (handwriting isn't the most essential skill these days and where you're currently at is totally serviceable!)

some of your characters have minor areas where the balance could be improved. (like some strokes a little too long or short, for example, or a part of the kanji feels small in comparison to the other part(s) of it.) if this is something you'd like to work on, i suggest using Japanese notebooks with quadrant squares (or even graph paper) with references that show characters within a quadrant quare to practice balance between strokes/kanji parts. (i find it can be pretty fun tbh)

keep up the good work and your critical eye!

Hello.

I think part (if not most) of the difficulty in balance is because you try to reproduce printing style. It is extremely difficult to achieve (and even if perfect balance is achieved, there is a feeling of "too symmetric").

In handwriting the sense of balance comes actually from an imbalance... the proportions between the parts are a bit exaggerated, the horizontal lines are actually slanted, etc.

It is not too hard to do, but you must look at handwriting models to get it, it doesn't show on printed text. Thankfully, there are plenty of videos online of handwriting exemples

believe me my one native japanese friend had sent me his kanji and I thought he had cut them all. I couldn't read them at all except the easy ones kao_shiawase.png
