Does anyone know what is the difference? It's kinda confusing
バイト is an abbreviation of アルバイト which comes from the German word Arbeit ("work").
バイト = default in everyday conversation
アルバイト = more formal / written / "full word" version
That's about it. I guess it's similar to "lab" vs "laboratory".
I think part of the reason バイト predominates, aside from the fact that being shorter is always an evolutionary advantage, is that アルバイト sounds like 或るバイト “a certain side job.”
