I've been using this app for 2 years now, and it is still asking me the most basic questions again and again. I've fiddled with the options, set the occurance right down, everything, but the app never learns. At this point I have to mark anything I get wrong as "mark right anyway" because I'm just getting frustrated with the app never allowing me to progress. I don't want to do a mountain of 200 questions every single day still, because it burns me out. I want to progress.
At this point I'm just hiding almost every word, but I don't even know if they're going to come up again because I haven't been given their alternate readings yet.
Is this a problem anyone else is having? I'm considering ditching Renshuu over this
(Example: When, if ever, will Renshuu recognize that I now what the numbers from 1 to 9 are already? Or basic days of the week, etc.)
I just got 冗談 again. It's at 100%, and level 9. That's not such a bad one I suppose, good to see it now and then. But I've gotten, say, "Sendai" wrong once, it'll then ask me "Sendai" every single day for the next week. The app seems all over the place in terms of mastery.
It's just that after 2 years, it still asking me the numbers, days of the week, different times (which honestly, just say "-ji" means time, it doesn't have to make every type of time a seperate question) and a load of other super-obvious easy questions that I've never once gotten wrong. It gets rather wearing.
And I'm not even sure if I should hide them because they have readings I haven't even learned yet, are they going to remain hidden when 5 centuries from now I can finally progress to the next levels and get the new readings?
(This is off topic, but the app seems quite cluttered too. I don't care for the stupid Kao-kun levelling thing, I'm here to learn Japanese, and before anyone says "some people like it" those people can get a tamagotchi.)
On the topic of the kao-chan levelling, you can turn it off in settings under motivations.
Are you learning new words in the schedules these are in, or are these in the schedules that you completed a while ago? because you could freeze/delete these schedules if you're not learning them anymore.
"There is not an automatic way to turn off fully mastered terms, but there is a way to do it.
Go to Tools > Advanced Search.
Then, for example, you could choose a schedule, then filter against 100% mastery, and then (as an Action) block all of those terms :)"
This is a recent post from Michael-san, so you could try this as well
My mastery level never goes above level 5, even if I get all my answers correct, and I study every day!!!!!!

I'm hiding all the words/kanji I know more or less, but also don't learn readings by themselves, only in context. So when a kanji I know and have hidden appears in a word with a reading I don't know, I just learn the word
Update: I just got "6" (mu), "blue/green" (aoi), "first day of the month" (seriously, why are these even questions?), and "that" (sono) today.
I don't believe I have ever gotten these questions wrong. 2 years later, here they are still.
Thanks Rnbw_grl1 I'll try that
("you learning new words in the schedules these are in, or are these in

freeze/delete these schedules if you're not learning them anymore."
Well that's really the issue, there are some words I may need to revise in them, I need the app to help me study what I don't know, but since it can't distinguish, I'm left trying to work it out for myself, which rather makes the app irrelevant to studying.
On the topic of the kao-chan thing, I'm highlighting how much unnecessary bloat this app has. There are thousands of obtuse options to change, and social things too. Is this app trying to teach Japanese or trying to be a new facebook? Cos honestly that workaround you gave earlier may be helpful, but it's weird I have to take such a convoluted action just to make a Japanese learning app teach me Japanese properly. It isn't helped that everywhere I go I see nothing but praise for Renshuu, but from studying with it, it's like I'm doing all the legwork while the app just peppers me with questions I could get from anywhere else.)
Actually while I'm at it, here are two other things that are annoying:
I noticed that sometimes I have to click multiple times before my click is recognized on the app, I don't know what purpose this serves apart from to frustrate the user.
Also, what is the point of the annoying "trick" questions? The ones where you'll get multiple choice answers which are only slightly different in spelling from each other? The ones that, when you're irritated answering the same old thing seems to 'catch you out' and punish you for it? Call me crazy, but Japanese signs and menus and whatever else aren't actually trying to trick the people reading them, so what is this suppose to prepare me for?
Just show me the correct Japanese spelling and let me learn them over time, the trick questions are a waste of time. The app bores me into not paying 100% attention, then punishes me for it boring me. Like, what?
Go to Settings → search "Kana misspellings". Should help reduce the annoying "Is it だいとうりょう or だいとうりよう" questions. Although I feel like it doesn't remove them completely. I guess it does say "Avoid using spelling mistakes as answer choices".
Also, about your initial question, you could set the mastery level spacing for level 9 to a huge number and I think you shouldn't see those words again. The setting is just below the kana misspelling setting in the quizzing section.
