Can you guys please bring back the real kana shiritori and not this katakana only. It is quite confusing why it is even a thing. Katakana words which are borrowed English words doesn't do anything that will progress learning the Japanese language. At least bring back the option to be able to write both hiragana and katakana words. Seems like going backwards instead of forwards in learning. Thanks. :)
What do you mean "bring back"? I have over 40 active games and only one of them is Katakana only. You should have 5 Kana (Anything goes) games, 1 Kana (Nouns only) game, and 1 Katakana only game. Are people in your "chunk" playing too slow for the Kana games to be available?
PS: Katakana is used for a lot more than just "borrowed English words". A lot of onomatopoeia use Katakana, e.g. ピカピカ, ドキドキ, etc., there are also many loanwords that come from a language different than English, e.g. カチューシャ, パン, バイト, etc.
And then there are words that mean something slightly different (sometimes completely) from what you'd expect. For example バイキング commonly refers to a smorgasbord.
I am aware there are more uses of katakana than just words outside of Japan. Thanks for the info on different games of shiritori. I must've completely missed it but saw it now. :D Time to play!
To top that off, loan words come from TONs of languages, not just English. パン comes to mind (French, I believe).
Even with English loanwords, the pronunciation is different 90% of the time, and even the meaning is different (either the entire meaning, or a nuance of its usage).

Unlike most loanwords in English which often retain the foreign pronunciation and meaning of the original word, it will be more helpful to understand loanwords NOT as:
English (or whatever) words written using Japanese
but rather
100% fully Japanese words (that, amusingly enough, will often not be understandable when said using the Japanese pronunciation to the speaker of the original language) that just happen to have originally come from another language.
To top that off, loan words come from TONs of languages, not just English. パン comes to mind (French, I believe).

Portuguese, not French, the confusion is understandable since both trace back to Latin. It came to Japan via Portuguese traders and missionaries during the early contact period :)
This note under パン — "Originates from the French spelling" — is wrong, but I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Fun fact: カチューシャ (Alice band) comes from Russian, but makes absolutely zero sense if you know Russian. It's like saying "put on your Katie (name)" and expecting people to know you mean a hair accessory XD
Imagine being from one of the Scandinavian countries and reading "We had (ate) a viking for dinner at the hotel yesterday." :))
Apologies for going a little off-topic, but I'm developing real appreciation for katakana words lately. A lot of them are sort of like deadpan jokes to me. I read and re-read and re-read the same word... and then the penny drops.

Rather than it only existing, I tend to have it as default and it presents it to me as the first one so it is understandable though there is some kana ones and kanji ones from a list but I'm only sure for android phones since I don't really use desktop or Apple ios much
