I recently tried renshuu pro because I was especially curious about the words in context function. I think that feature is really useful (together with the different fonts). But I think the difficulty of the sentences was way too high for my level.

Comprehensible input or zone of proximity wise it was so far from my level and the kanji/words/grammar I know that it wasn’t useful anymore but just frustrating.
Like 90% of the words were unfamiliar.

I wish there was a way to adjust those context sentences, often the example once I had given my answer was much more comprehensible and therefore useful. This means there are sentences that match my level, I wonder why they are not used for the context examples?

I will give pro another try once my level is a bit higher. Or maybe if I missed it I would love some advice how to change the difficulty level of sentences.

I was just like you in the first place, thinking why is it so difficult?! So, what I did was wait for my N5 (grammar, kanji, vocab) to complete (took me quite long kao_shame.png, but worth the wait and exp). That way I started with N5 sentences ( 50 sentences per day ), but unfortunately the sentences are like that if you keep in advancing they get a bit harder.
If you are thinking N5 sentences are way too high (I guess you are N5 level rn), then you have..a lot more..tough sentences coming kao_nozoki.png. From my POV, it's a positive aspect cuz the more harder it is , the more you will be able to understand other sentences.
Just trust the process, don't give up and be patient.
Slow and steady wins the race they say..kao_drink.png

Hm, no I don’t think that’s it. I’m somewhere around N4 level and the context sentences I saw had zero words I knew.

I don’t mean the examples you get after you answer correctly but the context function in renshuu pro. Instead of just asking for the meaning of a single word they have a whole sentence that uses the word in context. I wish I would have screenshotted some sentences but I canceled pro, so can’t do it anymore.

Edit: the function is called vocabulary in context. But context that’s so difficult I can’t read anything and every word needs to be looked up is not helpful 😅

Are you talking about these?

I can give you some random examples from one of my schedules:

I'm not sure if they scale with you. In case they don't, I can see how some of these might be an issue for people at N5 or N4. Were you getting similar sentences? I've always felt they were pretty random with difficulty.

I guess I should have grabbed examples from N5, but I honestly don't think there'd be much of a difference in terms of the surrounding vocab.

This is something that I'm actively working on. It's a bit trickier than you might think, but I agree that it needs to be improved.

A few things:

1. I'd honestly be surprised if 90% of the words are unknown. There are already guardrails in place to reject sentences that have too many unknown words in them. If you (the original poster) could give a few examples showing which words you do not know, I could look into it more.

Unless you have the setting turned on to ignore these restrictions (I doubt you do), then it draws the line at known words >= 50% (of words in the sentence), with <4 unknown words. (Do keep in mind that these are words marked as known, which may be larger than the words you have actually studied in renshuu).

Now these value are could be argued to be too high or too low, and I do want to expose these values so you can decide on your own.

2. The big thing that needs to be done better is handling grammar expressions. Renshuu already has a pretty good feel for what grammar you know (including verb conjugations), and what is in the sentences, it just needs to be wired together.

I actually think I could get those settings added in faster than not, so I might give it a try this week. I need to work through the other reports first.

How is the wording on this mock-up?

A bit wordy. I think you can drop the “in a sentence,” from the beginning. “Words I do not know” could be “unknown words” and “of the words be ones I know” could be “known words” (after striking “that”).

Thanks. How about this? Tried to make the wording between the two options more similar (which, of course, flips the meaning of the second one when comparing to the original image.)

This looks great!! And yes, it might have also been grammar that I’m not familiar with yet.

Probably a combination of grammar/kanji/vocab.

These settings are present now for testing.

As to kanji - that is completely up to the settings in your account. I'd take a look at your settings under vocabulary, and if you need more help grasping the system (as it is fairly complex), try the ? button > videos > kanji/vocab video.

Better grammar filtering should come in the future!
