Today I found that slightly more than 60 words on the N2 vocabulary schedule had been reset to zero. The android app presented them to me as new words. I have been studying these words for about four months. As far as I can tell, these words haven't been updated with new definitions, pronunciations or anything else. Therefore: bug, I think. I was disappointed to lose my progress.

The only thing I did with this schedule, immediately before this happened, was increase the quiz size from 40 words to 50 words. This should have no effect on mastery.

I am not sure why or how these specific words had their progress reset. Why was it only these 60 plus words, and not the entire N2 list? I am not sure.

Posting this here in case anyone has similar experience.

Can you list 3-5 of the words that have this issue?

Sure. The first five are: あたたまる、あてはめる、あれこれ、いいつける、いちいち.

I'm being reminded of these because I'm looking at Renshuu's "Words learned in the last week." So, they are listed in the order presented there. Which I think is the same order that the app gave them to me when learning. To be clear, I did not truly learn these in the last week.

The last five are: すれちがう、しょうがない、ぜひとも、そのほか、とりあえず。

By the way, I have readjusted my mastery on these words now. So, there's no need for any urgency. If I'm the only person who has had this issue, then I guess we can assume I pressed something wrong (although I can't imagine what).

I think it *might* be tied to the recent merged term data update that went through in November - although if you have not used renshuu recently (or not that schedule), it is possible that an issue from that did not appear until now?

If you haven't already, try running through this tool once: renshuu.org/index.php?page=user/merge_terms

I've used Renshuu every day for four months, I wasn't aware of the recent merged term update.

It's probably related to something I did. At the begging of the day, the schedule showed (correctly) no new terms to learn. And then after increasing the quiz size to 50 terms, then it appeared. It's very possible that I hit some button, or checked some box, by accident. Is there any quick way to reset mastery on 60+ terms (but not the whole list)? If there is, then that's probably it.

Anyway, as a one off it's not too bad to tell Renshuu that I I know the terms "well". If the issue happens again, I'll post back here.

The merge was supposed to get announced to everyone that it would have affected, but apparently that messaging did not make it out to everyone, so that's on me :(

The quickest way to reset mastery would be to go to View Terms (For the schedule), find where those terms are appearing, then at the top, switch the View to Tinker, which lets you change mastery with one tap. Be careful with the "change all terms" buttons, as I *think* (it's been awhile since I've looked at that code) it will change everything in that category, not just the ones on the current page.

Hello, I'm having the same problem. Had a bunch new words in my merged Basic/N5 words schedules reset thei masteries. About 40 or so. It happened yesterday, I think, though it seemed like it was only a word or two yesterday, then today a lot more. Not sure from which word classes they were, probably a mix of Basic, N5, and random words I added while doing N5 Sentences. Examples: ; だんだん ; これから ; ごめん ; ごみ

If it helps, additional info: I recently started the N4 words and grammar combo, and also N4 sentences. Both N5 and N4 Kanji have been completed some time ago. Been using Renshuu every day since summer. Sometimes on PC, othertimes my phone (Android).

Thank you for the attention. Hopefully this won't spread more!

I think i had the same problem but i managed to fix it.

A lot of the terms showed 0% Mastery even though i had studied them for a long time.

This seems to have only affected terms with a common hiragana writing and rarer Kanji writing. I now had to write these terms in Kanji when quizzed even though i used to be able to just answer in hiragana.

What i did to fix this:

1. Use the merge tool that Micheal mentioned: renshuu.org/index.php?page=user/merge_terms (that alone did not fix the issue for me)

2. In Settings -> Kanji: Set the setting "Show kanji for words commonly written in hiragana" to "No" and then to "All words" again

After that everthing looked normal again:

So i think this is not an issue with the mastery data itself but with the logic related to it.

See:

When this bug occurs it wrongly uses/displays "Kanji->meaning" and "Meaning->kanji" mastery levels even though i never learned these words through kanji. After the fix it correctly uses/displays "kana->meaning" and "meaning->kana" mastery levels.

Hope this helps!

Edit:
Just noticed a new (minor) bug. Now, in quizzes, for words like ささやく/く and かばう/う (words with a rare kanji writing) i now have to answer in hiragana, when before i had to write in kanji. Don't know if this is related to the original bug or not, but wanted to mention it just in case.

Thank you for the solutions. I had not been shown that merge tool. I will update this post if this turns out to not fix my problem and it happens again. For now, the schedules still list those "new" words as Lvl 1 Mastery, but who knows, maybe this will update over time.
