Forums - AI-powered Renshuu companion app

I've built a small app that will sync your Renshuu vocabulary and grammar and then use an OpenAI provider to generate challenge sentences for you based on your skill level. It will either generate an English sentence for you to translate to Japanese, or a Japanese sentence for you to translate back to English. It can show you furigana and supports clicking words to see their definitions. It prefers definitions that came directly from Renshuu when available.

I'm looking for people to help test it on Android or Linux right now. Maybe Windows, but I care more about mobile. No iOS yet - I don't have a Mac, and I'd need to get one to use their dev tooling.

Caveats and requirements:

* You need your own OpenAI provider API key and endpoint. If you don't know what this means, this probably isn't for you.
* AI is not perfect, and some OpenAI-compatible providers are better than others, so there should be no expectation that your translations are accurately scored by the LLM.
* You need to understand how to install Android apps from untrusted sources or how to sideload apps with ADB

There's a button to copy the app logs to email them if you see any funny behaviors. Right now, it doesn't always do a great job picking the correct reading for kanji, and sometimes the dictionary lookup choices are bad.

If you are interested in testing, please DM me so that I can send you a link to download the APK. I will not be posting the download information here.

Note that this is not meant to replace Renshuu or steal anything from Renshuu. This is a companion app to give you "randomly" generated translation practice.

Please use this thread for feedback.

Renshuu is pretty much against everything AI related

I do not use any AI in renshuu, but the API (which, for those who are not aware, is an open "connection" to use some of the data in renshuu) is open for people to do whatever they want with it!

This user reached out to me before this was released. There is nothing wrong with using the API in a way that works for you - it does not change anything about how things are run inside of renshuu, data in renshuu, or anything else in renshuu.

While renshuu itself has a stance on how we run things, I do not believe I have the right to enforce my beliefs on those outside of renshuu - you do whatever is best for you!

Edit: Also note, to the OP, that there are no DMs between users on renshuu (only users and myself), so no one will be able to contact you.

Oh! Well, then I guess I'll have to post the link here:

You have to have to have the app? I only have a tab on google...

I think what they meant is that they are using the web version (of Renshuu) instead of the app.

Why did it give me "Beginner"? XD

It might be my OpenAI provider, but the quality of the sentences and grading isn't great:

は「ご」とった。

うのはしいので、ぐにしてみてください。

Both very weird sentence. Grading was ok, but I had to figure out what exactly these were meant to be. It also gave me a different version of (might be the font or something).

I assume this isn't supposed to happen: Edit: Or is this intentional? I can see it being intentional.

Also got feedback in JP, which is something AI is known to do:

Not really a problem for me, but I assume it's not meant to happen. Also 白鷺 is incorrect or at least unnatural. ダイサギ is correct (unless I'm missing something). At any rate - not a species/type of カモメ.

Probably works much better with a paid provider, but I don't feel like spending money just to test it. You probably want someone with access to the more capable models.

It's pretty well put together though :)

Edit: It would be nice if you could ask it followup questions for clarification. That would also give it a chance to correct itself.

AI doesn't really help with natural language acquisition. It's practically a monkey with a typewriter, attempting to write a Shakespeare play. One of the problems is that over time, for example, the translation of the famous line in Hamlet, “To be, or not to be, that is the question.” has at least 40 variants. It's deeper than just making something that dresses up words. A learner has to develop comprehension of the sentence as naturally as possible. It's pretty cheap to have AI to do the work and have someone sound like a robot themselves.

Hey there! Thanks so much for your feedback. I just uploaded a new version that has a lot of changes:
https://drive.google.com/file/...

1. The "beginner" calculation was all messed up. It's much different now. I use more of the data from Renshuu to calculate your level.
2. The model you use with your provider is very important. I tried with GPT-OSS 20b, and it was.... not good. I switched to using Google Gemini Flash 2.5, and it's way, way better. If you have to run a local model, go with a larger parameter model (e.g., 70b vs 7b), but use a quantized version if you need to fit it in your VRAM.
3. I need to work on the system prompt because even Gemini will do weird things like give me the kanji reading for tobacco instead of using タバコ
4. Your Japanese feedback is also likely a model issue, and there's not much we can do about models failing to follow instructions, although I can probably make some tweaks to the prompt to improve that.

"Chat about this exercise" sounds like an interesting idea. I want to button up more of the sentence challenges first before I try to tackle that.

Again, thanks so much for your feedback! What provider/model were you using on what video card?

Yeah, a lot it was the model's fault. I was using GPT-OSS 20b through OpenRouter. My laptop can't really run anything locally (at least not anything better).

I knew the model/provider wasn't great, it was just the easiest/quickest way to try it out. Might spend a few bucks to try an actually good model, not sure though.

Do you need testing for anything that's not reliant on the model? Or at least not too reliant. I can at least test the new level calculation.

Actually, I'll do that right now:

d2f34bbabfaeac4a1b46d7d7.png

Looks accurate, at least as far as I can tell.

Update: I tried Gemma 3 27B, and that's pretty usable. Much better than GPT-OSS 20b.

If you end up messing with it more, things I know that are a little flaky:

* kanji segmentation -- it sometimes chooses weird things, like る (which is itself not normally used) gets broken up into る and る, so the translation (when you click the word) is goofy.
* Sometimes it chooses weird kanji instead of katakana

and other things.

The changes you're testing now also force it to use one grammar thing plus a few arbitrary vocabulary words.
Anyway, I really appreciate the testing. If you find any other general jankiness, let me know.
