Hey Renshuu Team,
I’m using the handwriting input feature with my Apple Pencil, and I ran into a problem during quizzes that’s driving me nuts.
When the quiz asks me to write hiragana for a spoken word, it plays the entire word out loud—but it doesn’t make clear which part of the word I’m supposed to write down. Am I writing one character? A couple? The whole thing? There’s no visual breakdown or context to guide me.
Check the attached screenshots. The first one shows a question I skipped because I couldn’t figure out what portion of “いっしょ” (issho) I was supposed to input. The answer screen revealed it wanted the full word, but during the quiz itself? No indication whatsoever.
Suggested Fix:
• Show the word visually with the specific part to write highlighted or blanked out
(like: “いっ____”).
• Or give a text prompt like: “Write the hiragana for: [part of word]” so we know what’s expected.
The handwriting feature is solid, but this lack of clarity makes the quiz frustrating instead of helpful.
I’d appreciate it if you guys could tighten this up.
Thanks for your time.

For vocab listening questions it always says the entire word, and you always answer with the entire word.
It never asks you for a partial response.
As far as the handwriting input goes. You input one character at a time. i.e. you'd first draw い, click on it (amongst the options that pop up), it will be added to your answer, and then the drawing window will clear. You then repeat that process for っ, し, and ょ
Thanks for the reply! As the above person noted, it is ALWAYS the full word - there are no partial word quizzes anywhere in renshuu.
Let me clarify what I meant…
When I’m doing handwriting quizzes with my Apple Pencil, the quiz plays the spoken word and asks me to write the hiragana or kanji. But here’s where it falls apart: sometimes it wants me to write a word that includes kanji I haven’t studied yet—the ones that show up grayed out in my lessons.
For example, the word 一緒 (issho). I learned the first kanji (一), but the second one (緒) is still locked. The quiz plays the full word “issho” out loud, but I got no clue I’m supposed to write both kanji. There’s nothing telling me which part I’m responsible for. Am I writing just 一? The whole thing? How much hiragana? It’s a total crapshoot.
Above the entry box for the answer, it will indicate what kind of response it wants. e.g. in this case, in blue it says "Hiragana (for the spoken word)", which means it expects hiragana and you don't need to answer any kanji there.
If a question wants you to answer with kanji it will say "Kanji" above the entry box. In those cases, you will be expected to answer with all the kanji you know. For the kanji you haven't studied yet, you could enter the kanji or just the hiragana for it. If you write hiragana for kanji that you already know, it won't penalize you, it will just tell you that it is still expecting X number of kanji that you already know when you try to submit it.
