(For more information on this upcoming feature, see here: https://new.renshuu.org/forums...)

In order to help guide my development, I am opening up "formal" applications for those who would like to manage a Study Group inside of renshuu?

While reading the above thread is most helpful, in short, a study group will be:

1. A *public* group on renshuu for anyone to join, bound by some theme or topic in Japanese learning. It could be cultural (an anime series, books, a music artist), "language" based (4-kanji compound group, haiku, calligraphy, etc.), goal-oriented (jlpt n3 prep, kanji kentei), or IRL (groups for a specific class in a school, etc.).

2. Study Groups (SG) will (eventually) have their own mini-forum, collections of resource lists (either made by members of the group, or selected from public lists in renshuu), ways to engage in smaller versions of renshuu elements (group-specific shiritori, question corner, etc.), group-specific kao garden quests, and possible even group goals for everyone to work towards! Also plan to have resource (vocab, etc.) lists that multiple people in the group can work on.

All group contents will be visible to ALL registered members: there will not be any renshuu pro-specific groups, nor will there be private groups. I might consider member approvals for some groups (like a group for an IRL class), but the SG page itself will still be visible to everyone. For similar reasons to the end of DM support last year, I am unable to provide safe moderation for renshuu without the ability for everyone to see everything :)

The SG development will be open as I go, and as I do not have a firm idea of how everything will look, this is your chance to be opinionated and let me know what you want to see as I build it!

Interested in running a group?

Please leave an "application" below, and include the following information:

1. Name of the group

2. Goal/topic/theme of the group (if you had to describe the group to possible new members in 1-2 sentences, what would yo say?)

3. Which of the features listed above do you feel your group would use the most?

Note: running a group does have a bit of responsibility: you'll be in charge of managing group ranks (letting in other helpers to let you deal with group settings, rotating games, approving entries to the list of resources, etc.), so this is not for saying "I'd like to see this kind of group", but rather, "I personally want to run (or help run) this kind of group.

1. Name of the group

Mastering Particles : が, は, を, に, & More!

2. Goal/topic/theme of the group

This group is all about mastering Japanese particles. We will explore how different particles are used, compare confusing ones (は vs が OR に vs へ), and share example sentences, do quizzes and resources to deepen understanding together! We will also make and provide or share usage notes from across the web or which is present in here and discuss about it
A short way to describe the group
: A friendly and open space to help understand the more complex aspects of learning particles. Sharing examples, asking questions, and learning from each other's experiences.

3. Features the group would use the most

  • Resource lists: Accurate examples, explanations.
  • Mini-forum: for discussions, sentence breakdowns and other Q&A.
  • Group goals and quizzes: small weekly challenges (Like : Do 5 sentences in a week based on the particles and then help if it is wrong. Then we would grade the sentences based if they are correct or wrong. ) etc.
  • Group shiritori or kao garden quests.

I would also like others to freely edit our idea with the main purpose staying same! kao_sparkles.png And I would also like to have other people collaborate.

Thanks for the reply! I think the group focus might be a little narrow - we don't (I think, at least) want TONS of similar groups so that a person gets spread out among too many - it'll be too much to pay attention to, and the more division we have (for examples, people asking questions in one study group instead of another, or in the forums), the chances of getting a good answer may go down.

So, while "grammar" is too broad, of course, and I can almost guarantee we'll have some groups focused on jlpt levels, maybe for this one, Grammar: Particles would be better?

Once a group theme is decided upon, it cannot be changed without admin approval - we don't want people being in a group, then the group suddenly changing, so getting a good range and scope from the get-go is important :)

Yeah I think Grammar: Particles has a nice ring to it. I agree. Also I just had this but how would leader get elected? kao_think.png

There are no elections - whoever applies for a group that gets approved is in charge. There is not a ton of admin duty, but they will be able to add helpers that have "lower than admin but higher than user" powers.

2. Goal/topic/theme of the group:

3. Features we’ll use the most:
We’ll focus on shared vocabulary/kanji resource lists, mini-forum discussions on tricky words or kanji nuances, and group shiritori for fun review practice. Group goals and kao garden quests would also be great for keeping everyone motivated.

NAME OF GROUP

Music and Lyrics (or something similar)

TOPIC OF GROUP

This group would be focused on the lyrics of songs written in Japanese. We would have discussions on the meanings of the lyrics, as well as have study schedules focused around the most frequently used words and phrases in Japanese music. We could maybe choose a new song every week as main study material for the group discussions. Songs could be linked from Spotify, YouTube or another streaming platform so that others could listen.

MOST USED FEATURE

I think we’d likely use the mini forum the most for discussing lyrics, and I think that study schedules will be thoroughly utilized as well. Shiritori and daily quests would probably be more secondary.

And of course, if there are any ideas as to how the idea above could be improved, let me know.

1. Name of the group:
Community Lists Builders

2. Goal/topic/theme of the group:

The goal of this group will be to create community lists around a certain topic and use those lists to quickly be able to start immersion on that specific topic. To do that, we'll first try to find a common topic that is not too general or too specific and try to see if we can recruit enough member to work on that topic. If, and only if, there is enough people, we'll start researching about that topic. We'll be exploring questions like if there are differences between spoken and written Japanese around that topic or the use of old Japanese in fantasy game or anime as well as cultural reference. Or the use of different "style" ( + よ、ね vs + ぞ). It will be an exploration of Japanese not only at the language level but also from a social or cultural perspective. Basically, the goal will be to remove anything that can (still) prevent immersion at intermediate level (lack of specific vocabulary, cultural references, etc) so that we can all enjoy our favorite topic as soon as possible :3 (and also allow beginner to study their favorite topic from the start along their main studies like JLPT, a textbook, etc)
And for that we'll use any features on renshuu that could be useful (combination of words + sentences lists, notes/comments on those lists, word notes maybe, article on the forum if we don't find a way to explain something through the lists, etc).

3. Features we'll use the most:

  • Mini forum mainly with 2 thread at least: one private for the "builders" and a public one to publish the result for questions, feedback or advises.
  • Working on the same community list if it's still planned

In comparison to other group tho, we won't have any activities like shiritori, weekly challenge or things like that. It will be mainly about deep diving into Japanese content, article, dictionaries, etc and sharing our discoveries or thought or experience with Japanese in order to create those lists. And after that everyone is free to go. Or maybe create a group around that topic in order to continue that exploration if they want to.
We could also accept request from other groups in the long term. Or temporarily recruit from those other groups. But not at the beginning. I want at least a few permanent core builders before, I think. I'm not too sure about the organization. Except that I don't want to burden anyone.

PS: Probably need the help of someone good at being concise first too... Sorry マイコー

1. Name of the group:
Listening / shadowing / translation experts

2. Goal/topic/theme of the group:

The main goal is to prepare for the JLPT N1 test (the listening part), and have the already in place weekly listening / shadowing / translation group reformed into a well organised topic based listening course that anyone could go through.

I would like to have each session recorded and categorised based on topic and difficulty. (Currently it's just listening tests but i would like to switch to a topic based approach instead)

3. Features we'll use the most:

Mainly the voice chat on discord, the current vocab sets for the N5-1, but mostly I'll use external resources like Genki for the topic-s the JLPT tests themselfs and some common podcasters like NIHONGO CON TEPPEI, YUYU, etc.

1. Name of the group:

Simple manga and stories

2. Goal/Theme of the group:

A book club-like community centered around getting into reading in japanese for (mostly) early-intermidiate learners. Potential goals might be reading a weekly/monthly story/manga and creating a welcoming community for people eager to start reading in the language without actually knowing where to start without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Features we'll use:

Community lists, discussion forum and group specific learning lists. The community can create it own list of literature recommended for every stage of reading progress that is both suitable for that level and fun. We can also make learning lists of vocabulary that are aimed towards those books or simple reading in generally. Finally, a place to discuss a manga you like in a friendly environment is very much welcome)

I don't know if I'm really qualified for this, but having a social aspect to my Japanese learning journey sounds like an incredible addition. Whether I'm running a group or simply participating in it, I know this is a feature I will use a lot!

Name of the group

JLPT N5 Crusaders

Goal/Theme

Pretty self-explanatory; the group would be focused for beginners looking to work their way up to the JLPT N5 test.

Features the group will use

There are already a ton of community lists centered around the JLPT tests, the study group would allow learners to find all the N5 content gathered in a single place. I know there are official practice workbooks, maybe we could turn them into group-specific learning lists (if that hasn't been done before).

The discussion forums will probably be useful to talk about Japanese learning at a beginner level, but could also host discussions that are specific to JLPT: how to register for an official evaluation, how to prepare for the exercises included in the tests, maybe advertise upcoming test sessions, news from the JEES and such... We could even go as far as organize practice testing sessions as community events!

1. Name of the group: Brightest stars!

(The name is based off of a song title from the rhythm game Ensemble Stars!!)

2. Theme: Learning and translating Japanese through a shared love of anime music projects!

Whether someone is just a casual enjoyer of anime music games, or loves oshikatsu, orrr buys every single drama CD, members will motivate themselves and each other to learn the language used in all the projects that they love.

3. Features:

Many community lists about song or character-related vocabulary, forums for recommendations and discussions about story in Japanese, and translation projects to contribute to the community. This is a group that will focus on 2D or 2.5D multimedia projects involving music, for example, Project Sekai, Enstars, D4DJ, Bandori, Hypnosis Mic, UniteUp and more. A lot of smaller projects similar to these ones are trapped behind a language barrier, so understanding and possibly translating them would be an aim as well.

Foodie group? What even is the Japanese for "foodie"?

Games, question corners and even haikus dedicated to the best Japanese (and other) foods. Recipe sharing (how to write a recipe in Japanese?), tips, new ingredients and reminiscing about that special okonomiyaki place or the amazing allspice from home.

I can't provide most of that information in Japanese, buy I can try admin for those who can. Don't have a discord account/server access.

According to one of my teachers, and because I am also a foodie, it can be (たべひと)as a colloquialism.

I'd be interested in this group too. recipes and such would be great to share in the group forum.

Topic/Name: Tech in Japanese

As someone in the cyber security field, shared intelligence helps cyber defenders, and those who think outside the box can come up with amazing solutions. This SG will be for those interested in expanding their Japanese vocabulary to be able to read up on Japanese Tech, from consumer trends to professional and academic journals and their place within Japan or the world.

I hope to collect lists of Japanese terms and concepts, and perhaps we could get enough people to have a reading/discussion group on an article or topic of the week.
