hi! I'm new to japanese, and I just read the example on how to read and use pitch (はし being pronounced differently 3 times). Is it common for there to words like this? I haven't seen anything like this and I don't know If I will remember the right pitch. sorry if this was unclear.
I totally understand your concern as I was exactly like you when I learned about pitch accent. To answer your question, yes it is very common for words to have different pitch in Japanese. It will vary from region to region, but basically view it as a way to differentiate words. In Japanese there's many words that sound the same, take for example あめ and あめ, they're the same in hiragana but spelled in kanji it's easy to differentiate (雨 vs 飴) well pitch accent basically does that but orally.
Personally, I'd say just don't worry about pitch, at least for now, there's so much more important stuff to learn before that. Japanese people will still understand you even if your pitch accent is horrible, that's all thanks to context. Having a perfect pitch will ofc only help you sound more native, but afaik it's basically the only thing it's gonna do. With time and exposure you will pick up pitch accent and sound more Japanese naturally.
