Japanese is like Chinese and Korean: the family name precedes the given name. However, Japanese is different in the way names are anglicized for western consumption, with the given name first and the family name last.

For example, (あべ しんぞう) is Shinzō Abe in western media.

This can create confusion among people who are unfamiliar with the convention. Especially if they think that Abe is short for Abraham.

So…it can go either way depending on the family? But traditionally surnames are used first?

You’re right this is a little confusing🫤

No, I’m sorry I didn’t explain it well. When written in Japanese, the family name always comes first. When written in roman letters, the family name comes last.
