I'm thinking of starting a small cassette collection, but I don't know where to start besides the player I wanna get.

If anyone has tips or experience for this kind of thing, it would be really appreciated!

Why not just get cassettes of songs from artists that you like? I assume that's what most collectors do.

I mean I'm probably gonna do that lol kao_yeah.png. But I more meant like how to take care of them and how to record and all that technical stuff. kao_think.png

I don't know a thing about modern cassette players (though I assume they come with digital-analog adaptors by now), but regarding caring for cassettes... don't keep them next to a fridge, phone, or magnets, and absolutely don't rewind them by sticking a pencil through the holes and turning. :)) Sorry, don't know why that's so funny, childhood memories I guess.

I've seen people record directly from their phones (3.5 mm). Not sure what player you're planning on getting, but the really cheap ones ($20-40) aren't great. Apart from that, pretty much what むじな said, but also keep them away from direct sunlight and moisture. You can store them like books on a shelf. Just make sure there's not pressure on the cassettes themselves. Sturdier shells can handle being staked horizontally, but it's better to keep them vertical.

Just noticed I actually have a few boxes of old cassettes next to me (DENON LX60, GoldStar HP60 and HITACHI DL60) 😁

I don’t understand why anyone would want to buy cassettes these days, other than the nostalgia factor. True they are analog when everything is digital, but they were never very good analog media.

I feel the same way as ポールおじちゃん. (I'm guessing we're the same age neko_laugh.png) Cassettes were a very convenient and versatile technology back in the day, before MP3 etc, but the sound quality is inferior to almost everything else. OTOH the sound of vinyl records is probably unbeatable. Why not collect vinyl if you want to go retro?

I want to get cassettes, because they allow me to own my music, they are cheaper than CDs a surprising amount of the time, and I like the feeling of clicking buttons and turning dials.

Ironically a better thesis than the one I'm doing for school kao_lazy.png

Also I like the imperfect warm sound quality.

Due to how big and unwieldy they are. Also they can get very 'shpensive.

Sitting next to a big shelf full of vinyls right now, collected by three generations. Admittedly, they're not the most compact medium out there, but you get used to manipulating them, and it has its own charm. They also live longer than cassettes, with some minimal care. And the sound really is crystal clear.

As for the pricey aspect, I wouldn't know about other parts of the world, but in Europe, depending on what you're looking for, they can be had for very cheap if you search. Music that's quite recent and that only got issued on vinyls as a nod to the eccentrics and collectors will continue to be expensive for a while, but two days ago I scored a two-disc Jesus Christ Superstar at a charity shop for all of 1€.

My dad actually owns some vinyls, but we don't have a record player kao_lazy.png Also here in the US of A, they are usually around 25-30 bucks.

I get that cassettes don't last especially long, but they are much more portable, and I like to listen to music wherever.
