I have this issue sometimes with my kanji schedules where:
I'll see a kanji I already learned elsewhere, let's call it kanji A
I mark kanji A as already having some level of mastery through the options below the flashcard
the kanji A card is swapped with a new kanji, B, as it should, so I assume everything worked
when I get to the quiz, kanji A appears, and when I answer I find that its mastery is actually low as if it were brand new
Extra: when I do my next round of kanji studying, I'm presented with kanji B as a never-studied card again
Sometimes in the middle of all that I open up the dictionary to see more details about new kanji. I'm not sure if that could be affecting things. I may have to test it next time I come across familiar kanji in my studies. (Edit: It happened again without me opening the dictionary, so that's not it.)
Is this a bug?
How can I mark kanji with the right level of mastery again after they've been incorrectly saved like this?
If there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this, please let me know.
So I reproduced the issue just now and it seems like a bug relating to the most recent change in items not saving.
I was studying the renshuu N3 kanji schedule, with the "relaxed" pacing of 2 new items per study session, 4 total per day, unlimited reviews.
Item #1 was 関, which I already know. I marked it as a little bit known.
Item #1 was then replaced with 顔, which I already know too. I marked it as known.
Item #1 was finally replaced with 危, which is new to me. I used the colored buttons to check related vocab and mnemonics, and to draw the character. I then proceeded to item #2.
Item #2 was 岩. Also new, so I studied it like the previous term.
I should note that in the N3 schedule i would have normally been presented 願 in there, but I already studied it elsewhere so it was not in this set.
With my two new kanji studied, I proceeded to the quiz. Here is what happened:
関 did not appear in the quiz, as intended. When I later looked it up, the mastery reflected my selection at study time.
顔 did appear in the quiz, with no pre-existing mastery, contrary to what I had selected at study time. After answering the question, I manually adjusted the term's mastery through the 3 dots menu.
危 did not appear in the quiz despite having been studied, and it remains available in my next set of new terms.
岩 did appear in the quiz as a new item, as intended.
Thanks for the report. This definitely sounds like a bug - it is one I've heard of before, but as of yet, neither I nor anyone else has been able to identify a way to reliably reproduce the issue :(
Thank you for confirming, マイコー. It's true it's not very consistent, I was able to mark a kanji as known today without issue. I'll report back if I find a reliable trigger on my testing.
