Hi there!
I've been been searching for a way to turn off the furigana for vocab quizzes. I find I can better gauge my ability to read the kanji of a verb when I don't have the furigana reading directly above. From a google search, I've come across the following setting in the forums:
However, when I turn this on, all my vocab schedules suddenly behave as if I've never studied them before.
Before turning on the setting:
After:
Is this supposed to happen?
Also, if anyone happens to know another way of turning off furigana in quizzes, it would be much appreciated! Are you supposed to have an additional "Kanji Schedule" to mark the Kanji as known? I've only gone through grammar and vocab schedules so far. I apologize if this is something that's already been asked before, as I've stumbled across various posts on the forums already. But I have yet to find a solution.
What you have done does work. It’s what I use personally. It’s sometimes referred to as the brute force method. The reason you suddenly have so many items to review is that all the previously suppressed kanji recognition questions are now active.
There are other methods that you could use. Tying a kanji schedule to each of your vocabulary schedules will gradually add new words to your review as you learn each character. This is the recommended approach for those just starting with Japanese.
If you already have considerable experience, you can choose whichever method makes the most sense to you.
Thanks for the answer! Regarding what you said about tying a kanji schedule to each of the vocab schedules, I found the option "Add Kanji Helper schedule" when I click "Manage your schedules" on the dashboard. Is that how one usually goes about doing that?
Yes, as I understand it, that’s how they are intended to be used.
Renshuu will not test you on kanji that you do not know, so it will display words with unknown kanji with furigana and quiz you on the readings of words instead of on recognizing the kanji forms. As you learn kanji, Renshuu will flag them as "known", and the furigana will be turned off and the kanji forms of words will be added to you vocabulary quizzes gradually.
To learn kanji, go to Manage Your Schedules or Community Lists and make a schedule of whatever set of kanji you want to study, and start learning it. The helper schedule ポール explained will dynamically generate kanji lists based on the words you're studying, if you would like to study words and their kanji in tandem.
If you have already studied some kanji before joining Renshuu, or are using a different resource for studying kanji, you can manually flag kanji as "known" by toggling the lightbulb next to them in lists or in the dictionary. If you need to mark a lot at once, use the Kanji Index in the Tools menu.
The option you've toggled in your screenshot essentially tells Renshuu to consider every kanji "known", which removes furigana globally and forces studying all words in their kanji forms, whether you've seen the kanji before or not. It's super overkill and will make studying needlessly difficult if you don't already know 1000+ kanji, so I would recommend turning that setting back to the default furigana mode and control how much furigana you see by studying kanji or manually marking individual ones "known" instead.
