Is it a good idea to purchase a calligraphy set and practice writing kanji in ink? I've been drawing kanji on my phone keyboard, but this doesn't seem like a good substitute for handwriting with a pen and paper.

It’s not necessary to practice 書道 to get comfortable writing kanji, but it can be a rewarding hobby if you enjoy that sort of thing. Look around and see if you can find a local artist who is offering instruction. There’s more to it than meets the eye.

To practice lettering, I recommend heavyweight graph paper and a fine tip rollerball or gel pen.
