Hi! I've been enjoying Shiritori Cat the past few days and I've encountered this situation when I reply to うら with うらぎりもの for example, and I get "the word needs to overlap with the previous word". Is it a bug or is it an unspoken rule that I cannot use the full word for my reply, only a part of it? It's just the rules do not specify this specifically and I wanted to be sure
You can't use the full word for your reply. You have to "take the tail". So in your example you could only reply with a word beginning with ら. As long as the word you play doesn't fully overlap the previous word, you're good.
Classic shiritori as played by children only reuses the last character from the previous word. Overlapping more than one character for bonus points is a renshuu enhancement.

AFAIK ポールおじちゃん is correct. Furthermore, AFAIK in classic shiritori as played by children, the word can only be a concrete noun, ie a physical thing, and unlike in Renshuu's rules, the word can end with a bar, eg エスカレーター. But it's the same as Renshuu, at least in the hiragana and katakana games, in that the word can not end with ん. The children's game is often played on a long car trip or in a situation where one has to kill time, like the English-speaking world's game "I Spy". There is usually a clear aim of getting out your opponent.
