How do I approach kanji?

Start with vocabulary. Renshuu’s recommended approach is explained in the help.

I'm a beginner. What should I study first?1. Japanese Alphabets
We highly recommend that you start with the hiragana alphabet, then move to the katakana alphabet. Most people find it easiest if they do not start katakana until they feel relatively comfortable with hiragana.

2. Japanese Basics
renshuu's "Japanese Basics" schedule helps you in learning the fundamentals of sentence construction. It is approached from a zero-beginner perspective. Additionally, the "Japanese Basics Words" schedule complements this by introducing the words used in the quizzing when you practice these sentence structures and word concepts.

3. Kanji
Kanji often acts as a wall to new learners and can be discouraging. So don't worry about kanji until you have at least 100 words learned in your vocabulary schedule. At this point, you can begin to learn through renshuu's kanji schedules.

The kanji schedules focus on individual kanji, but don't worry! As you study kanji on renshuu, they will automatically begin to appear in the vocabulary/sentences you see on renshuu, and you'll begin to get quizzed on these kanji in your vocabulary studies.
