I'm totally new to learning Japanese and I'm really struggling with katakana. A lot of the time I'm just kind of guessing what they mean and they just don't seem to be sticking in my head like hiragana does kao_lazy.png

Are there any tips or patterns within the kana that's been helpful for you to learn them?

Not to worry because its normal..I think you just started it. It might be difficult because of the strokes and was harder for me too in the beginning. But over time with practice, you will overcome.
Try not to overwhelm yourself with more than 3 terms per day.
Use mnemonics and are pretty helpful.

The katakana are all highly simplified versions of kanji characters, known as man'yōgana 万葉仮名. There’s probably no point in learning all the man'yōgana, but if you’re having trouble with a handful of kana, they can be a useful memory aid.

Fast food menus!! Menus of western restaurants or cafes are mostly written in katakana, so writing down orders or just reading them will help you memorise how they are read! Some romanisations can be super tricky, though, so keep it in mind.

I personally used https://www.tofugu.com/japanes...

I didn’t get it perfectly, but it took me a single day and I just opened some manga and read through them to cement it while I learned other things, which took another day or two. Simply scroll down till you see their katakana book and pair it with their quiz.kao_dead.png
