Let’s say you wanted to talk to your teacher. I’ve heard using “あなた” is considered inappropriate as it’s informal. I’m struggling to find an answer to this, so is there any way I can say it in a polite way? Please give examples if you can.

Yeah, that's pretty much it: , (名字) 、even (名字) さん if it's a more casual setting.

As for "addressing elders", (名字) さん or if you don't know their name you'd just kinda avoid saying "you".

You might lead with すみません、ちょっとおきしたいんですが…

There's also お伺い (formal) and お尋ね (a bit more formal).

Anyway, you'd just avoid あなた.

As a side note, I've heard foreigners use 恩に着る when thanking strangers 🤣

Imagine giving directions to someone and they go "I am forever in your debt".
