め or め? Whats the difference in the nuance here? Start, begin, first time, etc, which goes with which? Does it matter?

Also, はしめる vs はしまる?

thx

I don't know about the kanji but める vs まる is transitive vs intransitive, so the meaning is not the same

More experienced learners, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think め- is for something that happens for the first time, while め- is for something beginning to happen. Or, depending on the form, the first is for you doing something for the first time, while the second is for you beginning to do something.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

初め = "first time" something happens. Stuff like: 初恋 and 初見 (you see that a lot on JP streams).

始め = "beginning" or the act of starting something. めました = I started studying.

始まる (intransitive) = まる

始める (transitive) = めました

Oh, and めました would be wrong kao_no.png

In fact my IME wasn't even letting me type it kao_great.png

If you exclude the classical/literary version 初める (そめる), め doesn't have a verb form. It's only a noun.
