Ok, I just noticed コーギー is tagged as JLPT N5 in the dictionary and I've got to ask: why?! Are corgis really that popular in Japan? It seems oddly specific to have a specific dog breed in a beginner exam...

Well, then how do you feel about チワワ (also tagged as JLPT N5 in the dictionary)? kao_think.png

This Tadoku free graded reader is a nice story, by the way.

It's not that it's an n5 level word exactly, but that renshuu's pre-made schedules have a wider range of content than the JLPT tests (but also cover those) - we have a lot of words that come up in our grammar sentences during quizzing. This way, you don't have too many "overly simplified" sentences that ONLY use the jlpt vocabulary, but get some more realistic examples that use words that might not be the most common, but they help you get a better feel for the sentences.

Here's a funny one I happened upon, though it's apparenty out of use: more and more Westerners come to Japan and bring all sorts of new, unknown dog breeds with them, so what are you going to call all those? Apparently カメヤ, because you keep hearing the foreigners call out to them "come here!"

That is very funny and reminds of another one which could just be an urban legend. Supposedly in 1770 when Captain Cook explored the East coast of Australia, a member of the party from England asked an aboriginal bystander "what is that called?" pointing to a kangaroo. The answer "kangaroo" supposedly meant (in that aboriginal person's language) "I don't understand". The ship had an artist on board and they brought back drawings of kangaroos which were soon published in England, and the animal became famous under that name.
