To my understanding, when asking with

すきなスポーツはなんですか？

I can answer with the sports itself, like baseball and basketball, so

野球とバスケットがすきです


But when asking with,

どんあスポーツがすきですか？

I answer with what kind of sports I like, like a ball sports, instead of individual sports like before, so

ボールスポーツがすきです


Is my understanding right ?

Simplistically, 何 = what and どんな = which; so you're right, except that there's no term called どんあ.
