A poem I wrote for my lovely bestie kao_sorry.png

Starlit soul with crystal eyes--

Oceans sparkle when she cries;

Stardust falls upon the earth,

Nature glows in blissful mirth.

One two buckle my shoe
Three four buckle some more

White shoes ain't got no soul
What I got for Xmas was a black coal

O-Santa, what fell on thee
Did you enter your fort-ees?

My name huggy-wuggy
Body soft and kinda snuggly
Bet you really wanna hug me
Hold me all through the night.

Through the shadows I go gliding
In the vents where you're hiding
Dont you know theres no escaping

Playtime never really ended
Broken toys can’t be mended

I wrote one this morning. The meter probably sucks, but I didn't spend too much time thinking about it kao_think.png

Darkness looms upon the shore,

Spreading softly through my core.

Never-ending tidal waves

Drown the light of your embrace.

Golden sands — they weave a thread,

Mixed with hues of scarlet red.

What once was, is now no more,

Buried deep below the shore.

Ok so I found a thing on TikTok that had me busting my guts, I was laughing so hard. Technically it's not mine and it's also technically a song not a poem and it's out of season but I don't care, I had to post it:

♪On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me~♪

TRUST ISSUES 🧐

MAJOR TRAUMA 😥

DEPRESSION 😖

GASLIGHTING 😠

AAAANXIETYYYYYYY 😓

*inhales deeply*

So I had to end him 💀

Make my stand kao_punpun.png

Call my girlfriends over 🤫

♪AnD wE bUrIeD hIm UnDeR a PeAr TrEeEeEeEeE~♪🤭

You guys, I'm dying 🤣🤣

Hey everyone, I don't know much about Japanese poetry beyond haikus, and I was wondering if someone could give me some insight into it and its nature. kao_yoroshiku.png I'd love to write some Japanese poetry kao_heart.png

My understanding, which is not deep, is that the haiku is the fundamental unit of Japanese poems, analogous to a couplet. Longer poems, like tanka, use the same 5-7-5 concept but in a longer 5-7-5-7-7 pattern. You can also make long poems out of a sequence of haiku and/or tanka.

Because haiku are so compact, there is a whole special vocabulary, called “pillow words” 枕詞 that help to set the stage by bringing in the right references. It’s sort of like starting a limerick with “there once was a girl from Nantucket” (but not as crude).

There is also a style of poetry that is essentially Chinese. I don’t know much about that.

Just to clear up my misunderstanding, this is probably a dumb question but... do you count syllables in Japanese words the same way you would with English words? I think you do but then again just wanna double check :D kao_shame.png
