What’s the difference between counterpart and opposite? When two words are related, these are both options for describing how they are related, but I’m confused when to use one versus the other. In particular, I’m confused by the words related to 落第. Why is 登第 the opposite and 及第 a counterpart?
It's decided upon (by me, when reviewing word suggestion links) on a case-by-case basis (over many months, multiple links for one word may not come in at the same time). For opposites, I am trying to look for a very clear and DIRECT opposite.
As to that specific one, it is most likely that I felt differently when the two were reviewed. I adjusted them so they are both counterparts.
I am most likely to mark adjectives as opposites, less likely to do so for nouns/actions.
