I see くらい used a lot besides just meaning "approximately", so I was wondering if someone could help me out by giving me a brief explanation of it's various uses ^_^

I heard it in the context of: [adjective] + くらいに and I'm in complete and utter confusion lol

The dictionary definition for くらい lists three different senses.

  1. approximately, about, around, or so
  2. to (about) the extent that, (almost) enough that, so ... that ..., at least
  3. as ... as ..., like

It seems to me that you have encountered sense 2. Check out the grammar topic as well, under くらい/ぐらい

Ah, thank you! I looked it up in the grammar dictionary but somehow completely missed that entry even though it was in plain sight! If it's not too much of a bother, could you help me figure out the difference between the example sentence shown with くらい and the same sentence without くらい? Not really understanding the difference in meaning when it's added vs if it's left out ;w;

So like:

[adj] + くらいだ compared with [adj] + だ

and:

[adj] + くらいに compared with [adj. (adverbial form)] + に

This one?

  • にはしてもれないくらいだ。I cannot thank you enough.
  • にはしてもれないだ。I cannot thank you.

It sounds a little strange without it,

Yup that's the one! Thanks for the clarification. So the くらい means "[くらい: it's to the point where] it's impossible to thank you (even if I thank you it's impossible)" so without it it sounds rude without the くらい turning "I can't (because I don't want to or cannot)" into "[your kindness] is to the point where I can't thank you (because it wouldn't be enough?)"

Sorry I'm rambling. Thank you so much! You rock! thanks.png
