To bei able to read japanese well enough to consume manga, novels and jrpgs without having to rely in translations. There are so many great works that never reach the western markets that I want to experience.
I tried to start learning back in high school just because the sequel to my favorite game didn't get translated. Didn't get all that far in it though because I had too much other schoolwork to keep up with.
Discovered Renshuu a few months ago and decided to give it another go just for fun. There are a lot of games I'd like to play, maybe one day I'll tackle that original white whale of mine.
I've always wanted to learn a second la guage, though I lacked a good, useful reason to do so. Eventually, I started playing a lot of games that are made by Japanese devs. Final Fantasy XIV is a big one! As much as they translate stuff (or have fan translations) for us eventually, I figured being able to listen and read stuff directly from the JP devs would be really cool!
Once I had that idea, I eventually stumbled into renshuu randomly while looking at Google Play apps. I saw it had abnormally high reviews and figured it was worth a shot! Been enjoying it so far, and it's been very helpful! Can't wait until I can watch an interview with some of the devs and immediately know what they're saying!
I started learning Hiragana & Katakana because i wanted to read Japanese products in stores (shampoos, snacks, cosmetics)
i then got interested in the Japanese Olympic Voleyball team and found out they had a lot of untranslated content
so that drove me to find a way to learn the language! I now have another reason for learning Japanese: I hope to continue my studies in Japan, if that doesn't work out, I still intend to visit Japan often - there's just so many spots that i want to visit
I learnt about renshuu from reddit, i like how I was able to customise my own schedule and move at a pace I'm comfortable with. Learning just feels easier with this app
I really love watching VTubers, but I was sad I couldn't watch certain streamers unless their streams were clipped and translated by fellow fans. I wanted to be able to watch Japanese VTubers and not just English, so I started learning Japanese!
Also, I really want to go to Japan, and the thought of traveling abroad and not being able to communicate fully on my own is scary. So that's my other reason.
i’ve been inconsistently trying to learn japanese for about ten years now, and what finally made me bite and try to learn the language was that… so in 2014 i played a lot of animal crossing new leaf, and i went on club tortimer a lot. for those who never played, that was an online service (RIP) that put you on an island with a random other player from anywhere in the world. because of the times i was playing, i got matched with japanese players a lot… so i thought, well, this is my life now, and took that as an excuse to start learning japanese.
nowadays japanese media is still a big part of why i’m learning - in addition to just accessing untranslated stuff, i play splatoon competitively (“competitively” =/= “well”) and while i don’t agree with the ‘japanese players are Just Better’ sentiment some players hold, there’s still the issue of the language barrier between the japanese and western competitive scenes stopping us in the west from learning from players in japan. but i’m also really interested in the process of translation/localization, and i’d love to dig into the original japanese versions of some of the games i love and analyze what’s different and why the translators made the decisions they did.
anyway, i’ve tried a bunch of different strategies to learn japanese over the years, but i just got on renshuu the other day because i was looking through my twitter bookmarks and found i’d bookmarked a recommendation for this site. i’m really enjoying it so far! and i haven’t even fully explored all the features we have here. after the whole mess with duolingo earlier this year, i also really appreciate this site’s pledge to not use AI.
I started learning Japanese bc my mom made me (I'm 11:). She got obsessed and she said that if we all learn japanese we would be able to live in japan and me and my brother would go to school there and my other brother (who is going to go to college next month) could visit us there too and so really... who could say no to living in japan?!?
I was watching delicious in dungeon and wanted to understand the text in the background. I also do 3d modeling and see Alot of Pinterest posts in japanese.
It started gradually while I was unemployed. Now, I have to go to Japan for two years for work reasons, and I'm intensifying my learning to deal with DER PANIK.
At first when I started learning languages I only want to challenge myself, but it became my habit, it was essential to my rutine, so I started learning one language at the time when I reached B1 in English I started with Chinese, when I reached HSK5 in Chinese I wanted another challenge, at that time I remember that when I was a child I really want to learn Japanese because of anime, so basically starting learning Japanese was a method of bringing happiness to my inner child. Today I really enjoy the pronunciation so much like I do with Chinese and brings me comfort studying it. 🤗✨
