Forums - Set heatmap limitations

I would like the option to place a limit on the heatmap daily goal, e.g. "maximum limit of 200 terms per day," to keep the heatmap goal within a reasonable number. (I am only suggesting this feature because I could not study Japanese for a few weeks and then studied all my terms in a day, which led to an excessive daily heatmap goal.)

That sounds like it may be some other issue, because the heatmap (which is tied to your kaochan levels) is based on average study numbers over the last few days - so taking a break over two weeks should have reset it down to the minimum number (which I believe is somewhere around 20 terms a day).

If you can see the heatmap on my profile, all the white squares are days where I could not study, and the newest blue squares required somewhere between 100-300 terms to become the darkest shade of blue. I did study around 600 terms on odd days, but my average is somewhere between 100-200. (My daily goal has been above 100 terms for most of my time on renshuu.)

Is it possible that the intensive studying days have caused the heatmap goal to be too high? I was mindlessly doing long quizzes of 400+ terms on the weekends.

That's quite possible. It does average across ..I cannot recall, but I believe it's roughly 10 days. If I recall correctly, it completely ignores days in which no studying was done, so it's an average across all days with 1 or more term studied.

If there are any suggestions as to how to better form this baseline, I'm open to suggestions :)

Not so much a suggestion for the baseline itself, but I would like the option to set a number range to keep the study goal reasonable? E.g. a user wants their heatmap goal to be between 20 and 100 terms per day, so the heatmap's absolute maximum number of terms for the daily goal is 100. This could arguably be misused so people can attain the goal with little to no effort, but the heatmap is just a motivator. (Also, some users may appreciate setting small, manageable numbers if they are too busy to study more than a few terms.)

I can understand that reasoning - it's not something I can do now or soon (it'll add some additional complexity, and I get a feeling that if I add that, people are going to want to either set the number for the day, and/or set numbers for certain days of the week, etc.), and the idea of having skip days built in, or perhaps an option to have a color for the week instead of the day (with the expectation of x days of the the week having studying going on).

There's a lot of different directions that could be taken with the heatmap when it comes to customizing, so I am somewhat hesitant at adding on small features instead of stepping back and really taking a good look at it as a whole (and getting more community feedback).

Believe me, though, a lot of people take the heat map VERY seriously, so I want to be careful with any changes made.

I think setting the limitations could definitely be a self-imposed option, so users who like the current heatmap do not feel obligated to set limits to their goals. I agree that more community input is valuable. kao_think.png
