Forums - Browser (extension/add-on?) causing problems with renshuu

Edit: it appears to be an update to the "Threat Protection" feature on NordVPN. This is something that "lives" inside of your web browser and alters the content of the webpage, and is not something that renshuu (or any webpage, for that matter) can detect or recognize. Until (if?) NordVPN fixes this, there is most likely nothing I can do to fix it.

If you were sent to this thread from a DM from me, then I need your help!

It appears that a small number of browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) users have something present in their browser (most likely an add-on or extension, perhaps a content/ad blocker) that is causing issues with renshuu. It is rewriting parts of renshuu (inside of the browser, not renshuu itself), which is causing renshuu to appear that is bugging out. It is most likely due to an update in the browser that happened roughly 7-10 days ago.

In order to resolve this, I'd love to get the following information from you (if you are experiencing this issue):

1. What browser you are using

2. If you have an extensions installed that are meant to change the way the websites that you visit appear.

3. If you have anything in #2, try disabling it for renshuu and see if the problem goes away.

There is no need to run these types of extensions on renshuu
- we have 0 ads, and no trackers of any kind that might be considered undesirable, third-party or otherwise. In fact, I'll be happy to list all of the non-renshuu scripts that are run on renshuu:

1. typesquare - this is the font-delivery service that we use to get most of our awesome Japanese fonts!

2. sentry.io - this is loaded to report any browser errors that appear so I can hopefully fix them. The data picked up by this is stored in a private account on sentry.io that only I can view

3. If you are on renshuu.org (and not the app) and you visit the renshuu pro page, scripts for Stripe (credit card purchases) and Paypal are loaded to assist in creating the payment buttons.

This post will be updated if and most likely when we isolate what is causing it.

Hi! I tried 3 different browsers (Firefox, Chrome and Edge), all the same. Turned vpn off, nothing changed. In NordVPN for desktop, there is an option: Threat Protection Pro; it works even when vpn is off. When I paused it, things began to work properly. I think there was an update a few days ago. If you need more info, just ask.

Thanks for the update. Others with the same issue will be directed here, so we'll be able to see if there is a commonality between all the incidents.

I'm in the same boat with ncdona. I have a work laptop that I tried renshuu on and it works fine.
The NordVPN might have had an update a couple of days ago and when that "threat protection" is on, it gives me the "failed to load" error.
If I turned it off, like stopping the entire process, it works just fine.

With regards to any plugins for chrome, it's mostly like programming tools for work, a browser screen recorder, a full website page to PDF, and "LanguageReact". To my knowledge no plugins that directly modify the page to my knowledge.

Thanks for the update - this all lines up with what I'm seeing on my end. Due to the fact that these tools are meant to manipulate webpage content without the webpage's knowing, there really is not anything I can do to fix it.

If anyone is interested in reporting this to NordVPN through their paid account, I can help generate log information for you to send to them. Please DM me, or send me an email at michael@renshuu.org.

I already sent an email to them. I will provide the extra info they are requesting I told them about the Threat Protection issue but the answer didn't even mention my observation... Right now, for me, it is working like this: on the Threat Protection window, I deactivate the anti-malware and clean the cookies. I log in again and it works even with the vpn on.

To specify more: I also had to turn off the Anti-malware as well as the Advance Browsing Protection setting.

I received feedback from Nord. They asked to add the app to the antivirus exceptions list and firewall and they explained how to do it. Maybe these proceedings may solve the case (I am not a tech savvy in this area as many of you), but I am disappointed that they did not talk directly about the suspicion that the Threat Pro feature may be causing problems. And yes, now, just like エリーゼ I have to turn off the whole Treat Protection to have access to the site.

Have I proceeded with the changes it yet? Nope. Honestly, I don't know what to do.

That's quite frustrating. To the extent that I understand it, there is an almost 0% chance that this issue is affecting renshuu only. I consider myself fairly responsive to user reports, but the chances of getting this level of feedback from many websites (if you can even get access to a human) is low.
