I found myself reading about Hanko stamps, and i found out about the official seals, bank seals and the private seals. The first two were very straight forward about not including stuff not relevant to the person or company.

I got a question reguarding the private seal, みとめいん. I am curuius about what could/could not, and what should/should not be included in a seal that us going to be more than an artpiece.

For example, if i end up moving to and working in Japan i likely would end up doing like many others and converting my name to katakana and using that for my official and bank seal. But given the private seal being more of a recognizable mark, would it be appropriate to use three unrelated kanji? Oh lets say for the sake of example .

Wish you nothing but the best if days! And thank you for any input!

I think those three kanji in particular would be considered quite eccentric, but the practice is not unheard of. I remember reading about one foreigner who was presented with a personal hanko by her employer upon her arrival in Japan. It incorporated elements of several kanji that were phonetically related to her married name. The only problem was that professionally she went by her maiden name.

So not unheard of but strange, probably would be concidered rather touristy .Do you recall, or know at all, if the hanko related to her married name had the kanji relate to the name by themselves? Or did they sound like the name when put together?

Reguardless, i thank you for your input!

Its really just a signature at the end of the day.

I would say go professional just to be professional. But no one is really gonna mind that your seal will be in Kana if you are a foreigner.
