Update:

I found a small bug which was basically breaking all the updating on some schedules.

Please delete the kanji helper schedules, then use the same link to re-add them. I bet it works much better after that.

Sure, feel free to mark them.

I'll also let you know when I learn new words again.

Readings should be better!

Just finished studying, and it is indeed much better. Thank you!

The only issue I found is that now too many readings are enabled for a few terms.

Here is the list of what shouldn't be enabled:

has わか (れる)

has みっつ

has まわ (る)

has ある

I didn't learn these words yet, so the readings should be disabled, but I was even tested on one during review.

By chance, did you reset your account data (or part of it) at some point? (Apologies if you mentioned this before, and I simply forgot)

Yes, I reset my account right before creating these schedules.

Got it. So, the account reset process didn't (I'm updating it now) clear out this one table, as this particular table was dormant up until now (for many years), so I had neglected to remove the data. That's where those extra readings are coming in (and why the other readings were not appearing when they should have).

So, some readings I studied in the past can appear enabled even though I didn't learn a word with them after the reset?

I can live with that, or I might just reset again, now that it would clear them as well.

Thank you for taking note of my feedbacks, and so fast at that!

I have just one more question. If I change a reading manually as known/unknown can that mess with the system? Like if I mark a reading as unknown, then it would not get enabled even if I learn a word that uses it? Or how does that part work?

Hi, thank you for this wonderful feature. I have made a new schedule with the 'Kanji Helper' option but it has added a number of readings for some of the Kanji that I have never encountered (at least to the best of my knowledge). Is there any way to fix this?

I'm not quite sure if this is something I should report or if I'm doing something wrong but when I study a new word the Kanji is not added to my helper schedule. Most times it helps to delete the helper and add it new. I waited a few minutes before checking.

edit: more screenshots

after the word has been learned, no new item to learn

After adding the helper new

proof that the Kanji in question is in that to learn list (so it was included in the filter I chose)

It's fine. It's basically like the block (eye) icon - the reading is still in your data, it's just suppressed/hidden.

So, to clarify:

1. Vocab schedule has in it, unstudied.

2. You study it for the first time

3. After, is not in the kanji helper schedule.

4. If you then delete/rebuild the schedule, it's present.

If that's correct, would it be ok if I reset that one term to unlearned so I can test it out?

Yes, exactly!

Please feel free to do so. At the moment I have both kanji helpers (the old one where the Kanji wasn't added and the new rebuilt one with it) active. Let me know if I should do anything.

I made a Kanji helper schedule for the 'Words for Japanese Basics' schedule. I haven't tried learning any of the 'new' Kanji yet, I've just been studying the ones I already knew from the Kanji N5 and Kanji N4 schedules. Below are some of the Kanji I already knew that have had either Kunyomi or Onyomi readings added which I have not encountered before. The new ones are at 13% because I have studied them once whereas the others are higher because I had previously studied them in their original Kanji schedules.

Below are my known words for each of the 4 Kanji above showing I haven't encountered words with the 'new' readings. In fact, almost all of the words for each Kanji only use 1 reading but the Kanji helper schedule seems to have added a lot more.

It seems to have done this for every Kanji that appears in the word schedule. It is making it hard to study them as I don't recognise the readings because I haven't seen them in words.

The new readings that have been added also got added to my original N4/N5 kanji schedules after I made the 'Kanji Helper' schedule.

Thanks for your advice and help.

Well, I found the issue. As a developer, very embarrassing :(. There was a > instead of a >=, so with you setting it at "up to n1", it was actually doing "up to (but not including) n1"

@ExpertOdin - it's possible you changed this between your last message and now, but I see that you're currently on "don't use new system" for the Kanji Reading filter (a setting that's also on the Experimental page). The older system will become hidden to new members in the future, and it's highly recommended that you switch off to one of the other options. In particular, the older system is not only tied to words you have studied, so it is much easier for it to pull in extra readings (one of the reasons for the new system).

That may not clean up your problem, but it should help. As to why it may not be a complete fix: once you've studied a reading once, it's "in" your study data, and will not leave unless you manually block it.

I'll probably make this tool an option somewhere for those looking for a reset, but if you'd like, I can clean out your readings so ONLY ones that you've studied in vocabulary will appear.

At least you didn't have to do too much about it

Thank you for fixing it! BTW, do I have to add the schedules new or is the fix now immediately active?

You may want to swap the kanji restriction from one level to another to "reset" it.

Thank you! I've changed that setting now. I don't remember seeing it before but I must have selected it then forgotten about it.

Don't worry about clearing out my readings, there are a few I had already memorised despite not appearing in vocab and I'm slowly remembering the new ones. I just didn't want to study new kanji and have the same problem again.

Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it.

Hi Michael, once you're back could you have a look again?

It seems for me the automatic updating is still not working for me somehow. If I change the kanji filter to something else and back to Up to N1 it gets added though. Right now I'm using this as a workaround to have my new kanji added.
