||sumo has become people's entertainment since ancient times||
||I like to watch the Japan Sumo Association's Grand Sumo tournaments||
||six times a year, more than 500 rikishi gather for 15 days||
||that's called a basho||
||during a basho, you can see various traditional japanese things||
|| things like their hair, the referee and yobidashi, the kimono, the dohyou, the floating roof, i think all of it is very interesting||
||on top of that, after strong & cool sumotori get called by their wrestler names, they do various gestures BUT the bout is sometimes over in 2 seconds. I can't get enough||
short interviews of 3 wrestlers "to watch"
y'all need to get hyped
looool y'all
He also secured his first Emperor's Cup faster than any competitor since sumo adopted the current calendar of six annual grand tournaments in 1958, having made his official debut in September 2022.
Sumo is so fascinating to me! I want to track down some of those tournament videos and watch them now
Here's some stuff to study:
1. extremely short introductions of a few wrestlers with Japanese transcription under each video
2. nhk kimarite playlist (kimarite are the finishing moves that are declared with the winner)
I enjoy watching the matches with 宇良 {うら}. He's a very dynamic wrestler.
alright May 2024 tournament's over, last day on NHK world:
6:54 tamawashi v ichiyamamoto was nuts
12:56 good
17:14 another 7-7 on the last day
18:29 koreyori sanyaku stomp and start of zooming in on oonosato and his dad praying/crying
The 5-min NHK world recap of Nov 2024 tournament (english)
Late for Kyushu but made some fanart! Excited for sumo next year :3
1st day of 春場所 aka 大阪場所 starting today
Hoshoryu 豊昇龍 智勝 is now a Yokozuna
If anyone wants vocab lists for sumo, I've got a set under Community lists:
The set is named: Sumo
It has Ranks, General Vocab, Sumo Techniques, and the list of the Grand Tournaments as lists

@Anonymous123, any legal way to watch the tournament online? Maybe some official stream with 日本語 commentary or something similar?
Do you really know the weight of these guys are actually less than around 100Kg...intriguing

Abema is the streaming service, based in Japan, that streams the tournaments. It may or may not be available in your region.
Most of the guys in the top division, Makuuchi 幕内, are over 140 kg.
Midorifuji is 115 kg and probably the lightest guy there
Ura is 142 kg and is about average
Atamifuji is 189kg and probably the heaviest guy there
Yay, a sumo thread! Got into it last year watching NHK and I'm hooked. There's just so much going on in that short time. Midorifuji and the Waka brothers with their speed and agility (though the last two have been changing styles lately, I feel), veterans like Chiyoshouma and Tamawashi who always have a response, showmen like Ura the Man in Pink and Tobizaru the Flying Monkey.
But what I like most is that these people NEVER GIVE UP. They can have their toes on the tawara, their heel and half their body already hanging out, or be inches from the dohyou dirt, and they still. Hang. On. Give their best.
Who are your favourites, everyone? What do you make of the current tournament?
My current favorites are: Ura, Takayasu ("Papayasu"), and Hoshoryu.
As for this tournament:
Onosato is looking very strong.
Alas, our new Yokozuna Hoshoryu is looking a little rough. But, he seems to thrive under pressure, so we may see a strong rally from him.
