I know this is kind of a dumb question since anyone who's learning about a language would most likely want to interact with the culture as well, but I'm learning Japanese with no intent of ever traveling to Japan, and I feel like that's a little rare I do want to travel to Japan because it'd be easier to find merchandise for the media I'm into that isn't as popular in the US as opposed to Japan, and I also heard that Japan has a more 'introverted' society which I really like because I'm not that social of a person, but I'm a little scared because 1. I hate flying, and 2. I heard foreigners are treated differently than locals, so I feel like I wouldn't ever travel to Japan

I personally want to go to Japan to study even tho since I'm mixed and i think ill get alot of weird looks since my hair is very curly, (not saying Japanese people are racist i get alot of looks where I live to simply because there very few black people and little to no mixed people) although I've heard its easier to walk around Japan than it is in China.

That said, I really want to go there for the anime mangs and food!

Isn't that enough of a reason?

Though... while I've never even left my country before, let alone been in a plane, I think I can sympathise with not wanting to go on one...(though for me it's just anxiety regarding bringing my tablet)

But about the foreigners being treated differently thing... I think from how I've heard about it, that wouldn't affect a tourist...? So if it's just a short trip I wouldn't think that'd be a problem...

I live in Japan, so I guess the answer is yes. I didn't start learning until I moved here, because I didn't think about living here.

There is a big difference between going to Japan and living there. Foreigners are treated differently in Japan, but that also depends on race, whether you're treated better or worse... that's what people tell me; I haven't lived there myself. However, I've been to Japan twice already, and I think it's great for tourism. Generally, in the big cities, there are so many foreigners these days you're not going to feel any special attention. The only time you do get some is if you show that you can read Japanese, e.g. ordering from a Japanese menu at a restaurant.

In general, many people are learning Japanese without a particular intent to travel. Perhaps unlike you, if they got the opportunity they would, but they're perfectly happy if they don't either. They just want to consume Japanese content, and you don't need to be in Japan to do that.

Yes! I really enjoy learning languages, and my husband and I never got a honeymoon, so we are planning our trip to Japan for our 10 year anniversary. We're both very much interested in manga, anime, and Japanese history.

so we are actively planning and saving. He doesn't have much interest in learning the language quite like I do, but knows basic communication and manners. Though we are both incredibly nervous for the journey as we require medications that may not be readily available in Japan.
